THE FILMS OF PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON
PTA'S FILM PICKS
These are films Paul has mentioned over the years in various interviews
as being an influence on his work or in some cases just movies he dug.

watched the Boogie Nights commentary recently and Paul mentions his fave commentary ever is from John Sturges "Bad Day at Black Rock"
ReplyDeleteand of course, from the same commentary, "i Am Cuba".. i'm shocked that one's not already listed!
get 'em on here!
The "Bad Day at Black Rock" Sturges commentary, I believe, is only available on the LaserDisc...impossible to find. Have been searching for years, online and in vintage record/dvd shops.
DeleteThe DVD release has some boring historian rattling on.
Let us know if anyone has it...where to find.
I watched it recently via Netflix (dvd by mail) and it had the commentary on it.
DeleteYou can find the Sturges commentary at "Cinephilia & Beyond": http://cinephilearchive.tumblr.com/post/38154370629
DeleteHere's what i'm wondering, why did PTA stop doing any commentary tracks after Boogie Nights ?? His commentaries on BN and Sydney has got to be some of the most passionate, informative and interesting pieces on film making i've ever heard and seen and its unfortunate that he stopped doing them.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, looking forward to The Master, havent been to the theaters since TWBB and there's no movie more deserving to watch in a theater than a PTA movie.
Something I have thought about before. My guess is that PTA was frustrated in his indiscretions, particularly one anecdote where he intentionally flouted on-set insurance policy (asking Wahlberg to crash the car into the tree).
DeleteThat's all I've got though.
The page is blank...?

DeleteHmmm... I wish this was still here!
ReplyDeleteDoes the Black Rock DVD definitely have the Sturges commentary on it?
ReplyDeleteI wonder how expensive the Hard Eight DVD will get. Considering what's on it, it's a steal even at $40!
Hey how can I see the list of PTA's DVD picks? The page is blank
ReplyDeleteDidn't Paul say of East of Eden something like "I love the book, but I still don't know what they were trying to do with the movie." Why are there no links to WHAT Paul said about these movies? That would be more useful
ReplyDeleteIn an interview with Elvis Mitchell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90uWF-UUG1E) PTA says that he generally likes movies that have only pictures and music and he mentions "Koyaanisqatsi". (but cites "Baraka" as a bigger influence.) Can you get "Koyaanisqatsi" on here?
